There are some things in life you just can’t help but thank the universe for. When it comes to superfoods, I have three absolute favourites. Health enhancing, mood boosting, body balancing—these superfoods will support and enhance your detox journey. And the bonus? Their flavours will put you on a cullinary cloud nine.
Dubbed Food of the Gods, and for good reason. In cities worldwide, people are now “taking” cacao as a dance drug—but they’re merely reconnecting with an ancient tradition, a superfood that’s been used for millennia to improve vitality, open the heart chakra, and nourish the body. Cacao contains powerful antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and are anti-inflammatory (this is why cacao is part of my delicious detox plans!). And it gives you that “coffee” jolt thanks to theobromine, a mild stimulant. Add to that a dose of tryptophan, an amino acid that encourages your brain to produce more serotonin, and you can see why cacao has been worshiped since ancient time.
When it comes to flavour, it goes without saying – cacao ROCKS. Blend a scoop of cacao with a banana, a couple of dates and some almond milk: sometimes the simplest things are the best (as an extra treat I like to add a spoonful of peanut butter to the mix… guaranteed to curb that sweet craving and keep you energized for hours).
Another superfood that’s been present since forever is matcha. Rediscovered a few years ago, it’s now part of every hip coffeeshop menu and as ubiquitous in raw vegan cuisine as the fried egg in a roadside café. But it deserves its place, seriously, and not just because of is striking green colour. Matcha is another fantastic alternative to coffee if you’re trying to give up the black gold, or simply if you’re lacking energy. Its other superpower comes from its catechins, powerful antioxidants that scavenge free radicals from the body. Hence why matcha is a great addition to a detox. I love its subtle, earthy flavour paired with coconut – simply add a teaspoon or two into a food processor with cashews, desiccated coconut, a few dates, roll into balls and voila: super quick energizing treats. Or simply whisk some matcha with hot or cold almond milk (or other plant alternative) for a healthier alternative to coffee.
We eat with our eyes, and I love nothing more than the deep purple colour a heaped spoonful of acai powder gives my morning smoothie. Or, say, a chia pudding. This potent little berry contains anthocyanins, clever antioxidants that attach themselves to toxins and help your body get rid of them. One of my favourite ways of eating acai is in a chia breakfast bowl (actually chia seeds are another of my top superfoods, they’re amazing for encouraging the digestive system to eliminate unwanted toxins). Mix a spoonful of acai with 1 tablespoon of chia and 6 tablespoons of almond milk, leave 10 minutes to thicken, then add whatever takes your fancy: blueberries, banana, mango, peaches, cacao nibs, dates, goji berries… a breakfast bowl that puts a smile on your face and helps you start your day right.
You naturally release toxins when you’re on a detox, so flooding your body with nutrients that help neutralize and eliminate them is a must. And for me, detoxing is also about delicious food—food that you love and that love your body back. That’s why cacao, matcha and acai are my favourite detox companions.
